For companies seeking a lean, modern, scalable foundation with low extension costs and paramount customization, Saleor may be a better option than Litium.

## Saleor

Saleor is an open-source, GraphQL-native headless architecture platform designed around APIs and structured commerce data, built for engineering teams that want to control the storefront, integrations and, if necessary, the commerce backend itself. Businesses can use the managed Saleor Cloud service or run the open-source platform themselves to build fully custom storefronts and integrations. The other half of open-source freedom: unusual requirements can quickly become your team's architecture problem, and the ecosystem is smaller than the enterprise incumbents. Saleor removes the platform ceiling, but it doesn't magically remove the engineering underneath it.

**Strengths:**
- Microservices and GraphQL is native across the platform
- Open-source architecture provides exceptional technical control and portability
- Flexible models, product types, attributes and metadata support sophisticated commerce structures
- Native multi-channel capabilities work well for multi-region and multi-store architectures
- MCP and emerging agent-commerce tooling make the platform increasingly AI-friendly

**Trade-offs:**
- Complex codebase, implementation requires substantial developer involvement
- The integration and app ecosystem is smaller than major enterprise platforms
- Self-hosted installations transfer infrastructure and operational responsibility to the merchant
- MCP is currently read-only, limiting autonomous transactional use cases

## Litium

Litium is a cloud e-commerce platform combining commerce, PIM, CMS, and campaign management for B2B, B2C, and B2B2C businesses. Companies can use it as an integrated suite or take a headless/composable approach using its APIs and storefront accelerators. Users like the webshop and breadth of the stack, while some find the interface busy and question whether its PIM goes as deep outside the commerce channel as a specialist PIM.

**Strengths:**
- Strong B2B functionality covers account-specific pricing, assortments, roles and self-service
- Native PIM supports detailed catalogs and technical product information
- Headless APIs allow organizations to move beyond the standard storefront when required
- Storefront accelerators and integrations that reduce implementation effort

**Trade-offs:**
- Architecture is less purely composable than platforms originally designed as API-first headless systems
- Integration hiccups. Compatibility issues can arise
- Developer and partner ecosystems remain particularly Nordic-focused
