How to Check the Google Ranking of a Website?

Determining a website's Google ranking involves using various tools and techniques to assess how a website is performing in the search engine results pages (SERPs). It's essential to consider the ranking for specific keywords or phrases relevant to the website's content and purpose.

Wanna make sure you are dominating SERPs? Check out our purposely built, easy-to-follow SEO checklist and frontend performance checklist.

Here's a quick, systematic approach to assessing a website's Google ranking anyone can do.

Use Google Search

This is the simplest possible yet effective way to check the website's ranking. Enter the keywords or phrases relevant to your site into Google's search bar and scan through the SERPs to locate your website.

You can use SEO Search Simulator by Nightwatch to simulate search engine queries from any location on Google. I.e., wanna see how SERPS in Norway differs from the ones in Sweeden, and you want to know where you are at on both of these? Well, use this Chrome extension.

While straightforward, this method is not particularly efficient for tracking large sets of keywords or obtaining comprehensive data.

Use Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free tool provided by Google that allows website owners to check the performance of their site in Google's search results. It's really simple to use:

  1. Log into Google Search Console (given that you've already submitted your website OFC).
  2. Click on "Performance" on the left-hand side.
  3. Here, you will find information about the keywords your site ranks for, the number of clicks they receive, the impressions they generate, and their average SERP position.

Use SEO Tools

There are numerous SEO tools available that can track your website's ranking on Google for multiple keywords and provide more detailed insights. Some popular ones include SEMrush, Moz, Ahrefs, SEOMonitor, SurfSEO, etc.

Here's how to use SEMrush (our favorite) as an example:

  1. Sign up for an account on SEMrush (it offers both free and premium versions).
  2. Once you've logged in, click on "Dashboard" and then "Add Project."
  3. Enter your domain name and click "Create Project."
  4. Now, you can click "Position Tracking" and "Set it up." You can add the keywords you wish to track the ranking for here.
  5. SEMrush will track these keywords and provide daily updates on their rankings, changes in position, and other relevant metrics.

These tools also allow you to track your ranking over time, compare your performance with competitors, and gain insights into how changes to your site or your SEO strategy affect your ranking.

Remember, while Google ranking is an important metric, it's not the only one that matters. Other factors, such as organic traffic, click-through rate, bounce rate, and conversion rate, are essential indicators of your website's performance and effectiveness.
